Comandante Lab Series C40 MK4 Hammerhead Blade Burr Coffee Grinder

Begin with the burr

Burrs are usually treated like commodity items – functional and standardized. They’re tucked away inside the grinder, rarely celebrated, seldom questioned. But what if the burr geometry held the key to unlocking hidden taste potential, something roast curves or brew methods can’t fully reveal?

For over a decade, Comandante® founder Bernd Braune has been working on innovative concepts for conical burr sets. At our Bavarian Burr Lab, our engineers have been pushing the boundaries of machining technology and developing pioneering tooling to achieve them.

Lab Series gives you more freedom to experiment and explore flavor possibilities. Global brewing styles and taste preferences are subjective and, like coffee itself, wonderfully diverse. Embrace this diversity, confidently explore what tastes best to you, and enjoy not just the result, but also the journey getting there.

Hammerhead: a burr forged with a distinctive Hexagonal Block Blade geometry, inspired by the iconic shape of the hammerhead shark.

It’s engineered to handle the size and density of larger beans like Pacamara with remarkable precision, elevating their full-bodied sweetness and fruit-forward complexity.

This funky-looking thing is a versatile, high-performance burr that delivers outstanding grind quality – whether you’re brewing a chunky Pacamara, a petite heirloom, or anything in between. It embodies the precision and performance that define Comandante®.

Engineered for a lifetime

Every Comandante® C40 grinder is meticulously crafted by our expert team and built to last, using carefully selected materials. Its iconic shape has become synonymous with quality and world-class grind performance – a timeless, clean design created in the name of flavor clarity.

Not for me + same old comandante problems

"I bought the hammerhead based on very limited reviews citing it producing for more complex and interesting cups than the regular nitro blade. However, it still tastes 90% of the regular model, in that it likes to highlight dark and roasted notes of your coffee. If you like fruity, colourful, or vibrant acidity, this will not provide it. It completely rounds off notes that would otherwise provide nuances in the cup. It compresses all the details of the cup down to the point that some can become lost. Yes it could be considered "complex", but its at a heavy cost to the number of individual tasting notes that bean could provide. If your palette gravitates to heavy desert wine rather than dry crisp wine, then you'll probably like it, but it doesnt flatter my palette, unfortunately. Other things to note. It still takes much longer to grind than the competition. Sometimes more than a minute for filter if you slow feed it, and upwards of 2 minutes for espresso. And the grind adjustment dial is as antiquated as ever. I have no doubt to comandante's machine engineering credentials. In testing, their burrs were drastically better machined than the likes of 1zpresso, but none of that matters if the cup isn't as compelling. On one last note, the customer service has been exceptional. I had a problem with my return and the distributor managed to fix it within the same day with outstanding communication."
